The Mmm Game

Open any book. I spy something that starts with mmm. Let them hunt the page.

mmm sss b-b-b

This is the thirty-second game that works with any picture book already in your house. No prep, no letters, no flashcards, just a page and a sound.

How to play

  1. 1

Open any picture book to any page.

  2. 2

Pick something on the page and say only its first sound, not its letter name: “I spy something that starts with mmm...”

  3. 3

Let them hunt. Let them point. Let them get it wrong.

  4. 4

Celebrate the find, then go again with a new sound.

Make it easier: start with a page of only two or three pictures, or a few objects on the table, before busy pages. Picking one sound out of a crowded page is a big-kid skill.

What this is building

Sound matching.

This game works on sound matching. Your child holds one sound in mind and checks it against everything they can name on the page. They are not looking for a letter yet, they are listening to the beginning of spoken words. Start with a simple page and one stretchy sound like mmm or sss. Once they understand the game, every picture book becomes a sound hunt.
